Improvisation 2011, Grosvenor Place
Hugo Dalton is best known for his wall paintings. The artist has created a stage set for Sadlers Wells in London and exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The sculpture is a direct reflection of Hyde Park Roundabout in London which is immediately outside the lobby space. The bronze wall sculpture's form is taken from an 'automatic' drawing made of a dancer at the Royal Opera House. The work is finished on one side in black wax to give the sense of a tarmac surface. The Roundabout can be seen as a form of dance with drivers as the performers, each aware of their entry and exit. They improvise within the framework of a road system which itself is the choreography.
